JSO Presents a World Premiere by Composer Carolina Calvache
The Jackson Symphony Orchestra’s Classical Concert Series continues its 75th anniversary season with Symphonic Dances, a concert full of rhythm, movement, and powerful music. Taking place on March 22, 2025, at 7:30pm at the Potter Center (2111 Emmons Rd), this exciting program features bold sounds, fresh new music, and a grand finale that will leave audiences energized.
As we recognize National Women’s History Month, the JSO presents the world premiere of Hojarasca by composer Carolina Calvache, featuring JSO Principal Trombone Denis Jiron. Calvache, an award-winning composer and jazz pianist, blends jazz, classical, and Latin American folk music to create a distinct and compelling sound.
The evening begins with Leonard Bernstein’s On the Waterfront: Symphonic Suite, a powerful piece from his only film score. Bernstein’s music brings the drama of the movie to life with bold themes and jazz-inspired melodies.
The concert closes with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, his final orchestral work. This piece is full of energy, beautiful melodies, and dramatic moments, making for an unforgettable ending to the evening.
“An interesting thread connects all three composers on this program: though only Bernstein was born in the U.S., each of these works was composed in America,” said Jackson Symphony Orchestra Music Director Matthew Aubin. “Bernstein’s music is infused with the energy of mid-century New York, Calvache’s Hojarasca brings a Latin American perspective into an American orchestral setting, and Rachmaninoff—who fled Russia after the revolution—crafted his final symphonic statement while living in the United States.”
