Celebrate Love with Timeless Romantic Favorites at the JSO

The Jackson Symphony Orchestra’s Classical Concert Series continues its 75th anniversary season with an enchanting Valentine’s concert. Taking place on February 14 & 15, 2025, at 7:30pm, and February 16, 2025, at 2pm at Weatherwax Hall, (215 W. Michigan Ave., downtown Jackson) this program will feature Romantic favorites with cellist Julian Schwarz.

The evening begins with Johannes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn, a masterpiece that transforms a simple melody into a richly textured musical journey. Julian Schwarz will then take the stage to perform Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, a virtuosic work inspired by the elegance of the Rococo era and Mozart’s influence.

“One fascinating thread connecting the works on this program is that they were all inspired by earlier composers—Brahms looked back to Haydn, Tchaikovsky adored Mozart, and Schubert infused his youthful symphony with Mozart’s influence,” said Jackson Symphony Orchestra Music Director Matthew Aubin.

In the second half, Schwarz will perform Tchaikovsky’s Andante cantabile, a serene and poetic piece full of heartfelt emotion. The concert will conclude with Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, a youthful and charming symphony that bridges the classical and Romantic styles, leaving audiences uplifted and inspired.
