Jackson Symphony Orchestra Sound Vision Campaign enters Final Phase with $500,000 Challenge Grant

The Jackson Symphony Orchestra has just announced the receipt of a $500,000 challenge grant from the Weatherwax Foundation to benefit the Orchestra’s Capital Campaign Sound Vision.  “The Weatherwax Foundation will match new money dollar for dollar up to a total of $500,000  “This gives the Symphony a great opportunity to push forward to raise the final million dollars in our capital fund raising effort.”  said Phil Willis, Campaign Co- Chair.

The campaign, inititated in October of 2008, has raised over $2 million dollars and  already resulted in a new facility façade, two new in-school string teams, adult music education offerings, expanded music scholarship funds, and Jammin’ at the JSO, a youth oriented concert and performance venue.  The campaign will drive planned interior improvements of the downtown rehearsal, performance and education facility at 215 W. Michigan Ave.   “this building is a tremendous community asset and provides music lessons for thousands of individuals, houses countless performances and rehearsals and is the base to numerous area performing groups.” notes Stephen Osmond, JSO Music Director   The capital improvements will include new acoustics, lighting, reconfiguration of the interior entryway and attractive upgrades in the education areas along with technology upgrades throughout.

The Symphony has re-evaluated initial campaign goals and plans to complete the campaign at the $3.3 million mark.   This revision will provide all planned capital and programming projects, the building maintenance fund and approximately 50% of the targeted endowment funding.  Symphony officials plan a separate endowment drive at a later date. “The revised campaign plan provides the JSO with tools to confidently move forward in implementing programs, capital improvements and building provisions as laid out originally.”, explained Willis.  “As long as we meet our goals in other areas, deferring the remaining endowment portion of the campaign is a prudent choice in the currently challenging climate.”

The Weatherwax matching grant is a significant catalyst.  The JSO anticipates members of the community and especially those with JSO ties will take advantage of the opportunity to double their contributions.  Every effort will be made to contact community members to encourage participation.  “Several campaign donors have already added another year to their multi-year pledges to provide new money for the match.” reported Mary Spring Development Director.

The Jackson Symphony Orchestra recently celebrated its 60th anniversary as a key cultural institution in Jackson, and Stephen Osmond reflects, “The area’s generosity is exceptional.  The incredible level of support for this campaign is something all are rightly proud of.  We look forward to a successful completion, and a big celebration in the next year.”

“The Weatherwax Foundation recognizes the JSO’s efforts and success thus far.  We are pleased to be a significant partner in this fund raising effort.  Our expectation is not only that they will reach this goal, but that the funds raised will mean continuation and growth in outstanding long-term education and enrichment in this community.”,  said Maria Dotterweich, Weatherwax Foundation Executive Director.
